Welcome to My Blog on the Future of Video Games
I recently wrote an article for a fairly obscure Video Games blog. There were several questions that they asked me to respond to and one of them was to comment on where I thought video games were heading in the next 5 to 10 years. For convenience the next 2 posts contain copies of the original articel.
Firstly, I was surprised by how intensely I got involved in writing what should only have been a few words on the topic.
Secondly I was even more surprised to see how widely my views were distributed once they were published.
At first I was amused that so many games websites carried their edits of the same article…anyone would think I had a PR team working round the clock to get this much publicity, sadly not. Then I started to realise that the games industry seriously lacks a hard core of people who look at the appropriate technology trends, the business, the history of the industry and combine this with current and predicted consumer trends to create any sort of long term vision for the industry. There are plenty of few folks who enjoy producing forecasts based on current sales patterns, but they rarely extend their thinking beyond a 2 to 3 year time line horizon. That’s why I believe that my few words received so much attention…they were filling a void.
That’s why I’ve decided to start this blog, so that I and other people I know in the games industry can have a forum to air thought provoking ideas about the long term trends and the future of this $25B industry ! I hope to provoke debate and inspire further thought and discussion on the key topics.
Welcome to Games Nostradamus.

As someone who takes an interest in GameMaker I was quite surprised to see your comments on the future of consoles popping up everywhere, I thought perhaps you had given a press conference or something, until I found the interview it all seems to of originated from - certainly good publicity.

It was all a bit unintentional….nobody was more surprised than me with how much coverage it got. BTW…how did you find this blog ?

Your prediction about the convergence of console, PC and content-delivery technology was correct, but you don’t need Nostradamus to spot a trend that’s already well underway. So that’s pretty safe ground.
But your article also touched on something more important than technology trends: independent, self-publishers. Over the next 5 years, this will have MUCH more influence on the video gaming industry than hardware development alone. The ability of everyday users to develop and deliver specialized content to a target audience will change everything. We saw this happen in the music industry first, and now it’s happening in the newspaper industry.
To me, that was the most important observation you made.

@kc lc….hello stranger
Glad you agree about convergence…I’m amazed at how many people were shocked that I said it … and I agree so much with your second point that I’m already writing more about it ! I think user generated content and small independent publishers are the future of the industry….more later. The funny thing is that it is simply history repeating itself…if you look at the “BritSoft” movement you can see how it spawned great publishers such as Ocean, Gremlin, Eidos and Codemasters amongst many others….much of it based on young kids writing games at home on their ZX-81s, Sinclair Spectrums and BBC Micros !
